1 Shawwal 1436 AH
Eid al-Fitr 2015 is expected on Friday, 17 July 2015 (1 Shawwal 1436 AH). Dates in the Islamic calendar follow the moon, so they move about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year. The date shown here is based on the Umm Al-Qura calendar used in Saudi Arabia; in countries that rely on local moon sighting, such as Pakistan, India and Bangladesh, it may fall one day later.
Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal, the month after Ramadan. It begins once the new crescent moon is sighted on the 29th night of Ramadan, or after Ramadan completes 30 days.
The day starts with the Eid prayer in congregation shortly after sunrise. Before the prayer, every Muslim who is able pays Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrana) on behalf of themselves and their dependants so that people in need can celebrate too. It is a day of gratitude, new clothes, family visits and food — and fasting on this day is not permitted.
