9 Dhu Al-Hijjah 1439 AH
Day of Arafah 2018 is expected on Monday, 20 August 2018 (9 Dhu Al-Hijjah 1439 AH). Dates in the Islamic calendar follow the moon, so they move about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year. The date shown here is based on the Umm Al-Qura calendar used in Saudi Arabia; in countries that rely on local moon sighting, such as Pakistan, India and Bangladesh, it may fall one day later.
The Day of Arafah is the 9th of Dhu al-Hijjah, when pilgrims stand on the plain of Arafat near Makkah from midday until sunset — the essential rite of the Hajj. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Hajj is Arafah."
For Muslims who are not performing Hajj, fasting on the Day of Arafah is a highly recommended Sunnah; the Prophet (peace be upon him) said it expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year (Sahih Muslim).
