10 Muharram 1442 AH
Ashura 2020 is expected on Saturday, 29 August 2020 (10 Muharram 1442 AH). Dates in the Islamic calendar follow the moon, so they move about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year. The date shown here is based on the Umm Al-Qura calendar used in Saudi Arabia; in countries that rely on local moon sighting, such as Pakistan, India and Bangladesh, it may fall one day later.
Ashura is the 10th day of Muharram. It is the day Allah saved Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) and the Children of Israel from Pharaoh, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) fasted on it and encouraged Muslims to do the same, saying it expiates the sins of the previous year (Sahih Muslim). It is recommended to also fast the 9th or the 11th.
Ashura is also the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet (peace be upon him), at Karbala in 680 CE, which Muslims — and Shia Muslims in particular — commemorate with mourning.
